Ambassador Mitchell and USAID Mission Director Chris Milligan are in Rakhine State to observe flood relief efforts and visit affected communities. Yesterday, they visited Mrauk-U, where they were saddened to see the severe impact of the flooding. Despite the destruction, Ambassador Mitchell and the team were heartened and inspired by the spirit of resilience of those who have lost so much in the heavy rains and flooding.
Ambassador Mitchell met with farmers in Myaung Bwe village, in Mrauk-U township. Many farmers in this area have lost their entire crop due to flooding. USAID is distributing over nine metric tons of rice seed to help over 1,600 farmers affected by the flood. This specially-adapted short-cycle seed will help to limit the loss of this harvest season. Farmers whose crops fared better expressed their desire to donate this seed stock to neighbors with greater need.
After speaking to several farmers and helping plant rice seed, Ambassador Mitchell said, “We are focused on relieving the hardships of this state and across the country. We intend to continue to invest in the people of Rakhine State.”
Through new and existing activities, the U.S. government will provide over $4.5 million in flood relief and recovery assistance to people impacted by the disaster.
